How to Test Mouse Latency: Complete Guide for Gamers
Mouse latency affects your gaming more than most people realize — but testing it properly takes more than just clicking a button a few times. Here's how to do it right and actually understand what the numbers mean.
What Is Mouse Latency and Why Should You Measure It?
Mouse latency — sometimes called input lag or click response time — is the delay between the moment you physically press the mouse button and the moment your computer registers that click. It's measured in milliseconds. For everyday computing, a difference of 5ms is invisible. For competitive gaming, it's very real.
Here's a useful mental model: at 60 frames per second, each frame lasts about 16.7ms. If your mouse has 15ms of latency, you're almost always clicking in a previous frame — by the time the game gets your input, the frame has changed. At 1000Hz with low latency, you're getting near-frame-perfect inputs. That's the delta that separates good gear from great gear for competitive play.
Measuring latency also helps you diagnose real problems. If your click latency is all over the place — sometimes 5ms, sometimes 40ms — that inconsistency tells you something's wrong. Could be a USB issue, a driver conflict, or a mouse that's starting to wear out. Without testing, you'd never know.
Before You Start: Set Up Your Environment Correctly
Testing latency without preparing your system first gives you noisy results. A few minutes of setup makes your readings much more meaningful.
Close every background application you don't need — especially anything that uses CPU heavily in the background like browsers with many tabs, Discord with video, or game launchers doing updates. System load affects how quickly your OS processes USB interrupt requests from your mouse, which directly shows up in your latency numbers.
Plug your mouse directly into a USB port on your motherboard, not a hub or a front-panel port if you can avoid it. Front-panel USB connectors typically have more signal interference than rear motherboard ports. If you're testing a wireless mouse, make sure the receiver is plugged in close to the mouse — ideally using a USB extension cable so it's sitting on the desk near where you work, not buried behind your PC.
Also disable mouse acceleration ("Enhance pointer precision" in Windows) if you haven't already. It doesn't directly affect click latency readings, but it can affect movement-based metrics and it's generally worth having off anyway.

Step 1: Start the latency test tool
Open the Mouse Latency Tester in a fresh browser tab. No installation needed. The tool uses the browser's performance.now() API which gives sub-millisecond timing precision — more than accurate enough for practical testing.
Step 2: Take 15–20 samples minimum
Don't stop after five clicks. Human reaction time varies, and so does system behavior. The first couple of reads are sometimes outliers as the browser warms up. Take at least 15 samples, ideally 20–30. Look at both your average and your best reading — the best gives you a sense of your hardware ceiling, while the average tells you what you actually experience in a real session.
Step 3: Record your baseline
Before changing anything on your system, write down your numbers. This is your baseline. If you make optimizations later and want to know if they helped, you need something to compare against. No baseline means no way to tell if your upgrade or settings change actually did anything.
Reading Your Results: What the Numbers Mean
Excellent. High-end gaming mouse, optimized system.
Good. Most quality gaming mice land here.
Acceptable. Standard mice, or gaming mice with suboptimal settings.
Poor. Worth investigating your hardware and settings.
The number you care most about for gaming is your best consistent result — not your absolute best single click, but the range your best clicks cluster in. High variance (e.g. readings swinging between 5ms and 30ms) is often worse than a steady 12ms, because inconsistency messes with muscle memory.
Common Mistakes When Testing
Testing under load. If you've got a game running in the background, your browser open on twenty tabs, and Discord doing a video call — your readings mean nothing. Test on a clean system.
Only running one test. One good test session after a coffee gives you different numbers than one session while tired and distracted. Average your results across a couple of sessions if you want reliable data.
Confusing latency with reaction time. A browser-based test measures the whole input chain — not just your mouse hardware. Your own reaction adds noise. That's fine: what you're testing is total system latency as it affects a real game, which is exactly what matters.
Testing wireless from far away. If your receiver is plugged in the back of your PC tower and your mouse is at arm's length, wireless signal quality degrades. Use a USB extension to bring the receiver close to your mousepad when testing.
When to Think About Replacing Your Mouse
Sometimes no amount of software tweaking fixes the problem because the hardware itself is worn out. Mouse switches have a rated click lifespan (usually 20–50 million clicks depending on the brand). After years of heavy use, switches can develop inconsistent actuation — they'll sometimes register a click immediately, sometimes with a slight delay.
The telltale sign is high variance in your test results even after you've cleaned up your system settings. If your best clicks are around 5ms but you regularly see 25–40ms spikes with no obvious system cause, the switch debouncing in your mouse firmware is probably working overtime to compensate for a degrading switch.
